Product Review: NYC Applelicious Glossy Lip Balm

It still feels like winter in my part of the world, and March has indeed come in like a lion. At the same time, I’ve been looking at spring makeup in my usual glossy magazines and I spotted a photo of these funny little products from the drugstore line NYC (New York Color).

I’m constantly gathering images for my posts about art history and perfume advertising, and I’ve come across many beautiful examples from the past century. I’ve also encountered some ads that have not aged well at all. Here are five perfume advertisements that seem (to me, at least) unappealing, borderline offensive, or just plain odd.

My Back Pages: Perfume in Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses

The past week-and-a-half have been draining for me: I caught the flu, my husband caught the flu from me, and our sweet cat M. was suddenly ill (but not with the flu). We’re all on the mend now, I’m happy to say.

“Escapism” and “Cormac McCarthy” aren’t words that you usually see in the same sentence, but McCarthy’s novel All the Pretty Horses gave me something to focus on last week when I needed an emotional break from our various illnesses.
