I’ve never smoked, and I don’t intend to start. But… if I’d been around in 1918, when this advertisement was published, I might have been tempted to try Milo Violets.

These cigarettes were “delicately scented,” with “gold tips,” perfect “for the woman of discernment.” And they apparently not only smelled lovely and enhanced a woman’s personal style, but also encouraged an enthusiasm for modern art, judging by that painting hanging behind the two women.

When I traveled to Newport, Rhode Island last spring (see my post here!), I made a stop to the Farmaesthetics boutique on Bellevue Avenue and purchased a few trial-size products. I’m about to finish up my small tin of Hand to Heel Softening Salve, so this review is long overdue!

My Back Pages: Perfume in “Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood”

From the ages of ten to thirteen, I was fanatical about Ellen Conford’s fiction. Throughout junior high school, I read and re-read every book that she had written for young adults, reveling in her writing style as much as her stories about the everyday ups and downs of teen life.

Some of my favorites in the Conford oeuvre were Seven Days to a Brand New Me and We Interrupt This Semester for an Important Bulletin—I even presented an oral book report on the latter title to my sixth-grade language arts class. One Conford novel that has been on my mind over the past few weeks, as I’ve watched the local children and pre-teens return from summer camp, is Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood (1978).

A Visit to the Palais des Thes Boutique in SoHo

I’ve known about the French brand Palais des Thés for a while, and I’ve purchased their tea once or twice at various shops around New York, but I just made my first visit to a Palais des Thés boutique last week. There are currently two Palais des Thés boutiques in Manhattan, one on the Upper West Side and one located at 156 Prince Street in SoHo.

This SoHo location stocks over 100 varieties of tea, all directly sourced by Palais des Thés (which has been in business since 1986). I have a very basic knowledge of tea, as well as certain preferences, but I was a bit overwhelmed by this range of choices. Fortunately, the boutique’s staff were helpful as well as knowledgeable. And, as a perfume-lover, I was happy to see that the teas were categorized not only by country of origin and by type (black, green, or white) , but also by flavor: fruity, flowery, smoky, etc. …
