“Helena Rubinstein: Beauty is Power” at The Jewish Museum

Rubinstein_Blog_760

Helena Rubinstein’s birthdate was December 25, 1872, so I thought I’d share this vintage advertisement (featuring Madame Rubinstein herself!) and a reminder that the Jewish Museum’s exhibition about Rubinstein continues through March 22. I highly recommend it—it gives a detailed and lively look at the career of this one-of-a-kind cosmetics entrepreneur, art collector, and philanthropist. You can read more of my thoughts on the exhibition here, at Biography.com.

For more information about the show, visit the Jewish Museum’s website.

Icons & Influences: John Waters and “Odorama”

unnamed-3

Earlier this month I had an opportunity to meet John Waters. He made an appearance at an academic conference in his hometown of Baltimore, and he was as funny as you’d expect and as gracious as you could hope. He spent a while signing books and other memorabilia after he spoke to the audience.

Grand Opening of 942 Summit, Jersey City: Tea! Gluten-Free Desserts! Natural Bath & Body Products!

942 summit

Sorry about all those exclamation points… I’m just a little (well, a lot!) excited about a new business venture that has opened in Jersey City, New Jersey, where I happen to live. August 2014 Guerlain Makeover

KICX5758

Last Friday I went to Bergdorf Goodman and had my makeup applied by one of Guerlain’s regional makeup artists. Her name was Jessica Mayo. She was friendly and sweet, and she expertly selected shades that really worked for my coloring and then taught me some skincare and application tips. When we were finished, she filled out the above face-chart for me. Obviously, I can’t buy everything on that list, but I did make a small purchase or two. Reviews of these products to follow soon!
