Retail Therapy: Face Stockholm

It’s been a difficult month or so, for reasons that I won’t go into here. (I’m not one of those so-called millennials who are comfortable sharing everything on the internet—it’s just not in my nature nor my background!) Last Friday I needed some kind of little pick-me-up, so I made a brief detour to The Shops at Columbus Circle Time Warner Center (its full, official name), that towering upscale urban mall that I happen to enjoy more than I should.

Typically, when I venture into Time Warner’s cavernous lobby, I turn towards one of my usual stops: Sephora, Whole Foods (for the Whole Body department), or Aveda. On Friday night, I stepped into the Face Stockholm boutique. I used to visit Face Stockholm’s SoHo shop once in a while, but I haven’t been there in years, and now it’s closed, so this glossy little capsule shop at Columbus Circle is the brand’s sole outpost in NYC right now.

National Poetry Month 2014: A Poem by Emily Dickinson

Mary Cassatt Printmaker

April is National Poetry Month. I almost forgot; but, with just a few days to spare, here’s a poem by Emily Dickinson that has long been one of my favorites.

#443

I tie my Hat—I crease my Shawl—
Life’s little duties do—precisely—
As the very least
Were infinite—to me—

I put new Blossoms in the Glass—
And throw the old—away—
I push a petal from my gown
That anchored there—I weigh
The time ’twill be till six o’clock
I have so much to do—
And yet—Existence—some way back—
Stopped—struck—my ticking—through—
We cannot put Ourself away
As a completed Man
Or Woman—When the Errand’s done
We came to Flesh—upon—
There may be—Miles on Miles of Nought—
Of Action—sicker far—
To simulate—is stinging work—
To cover what we are
From Science—and from Surgery—
Too Telescopic Eyes
To bear on us unshaded—
For their—sake—not for Ours—
‘Twould start them—
We—could tremble—
But since we got a Bomb—
And held it in our Bosom—
Nay—Hold it—it is calm—

Therefore—we do life’s labor—
Though life’s Reward—be done—
With scrupulous exactness—
To hold our Senses—on—

On the Street: Doc Martens, Redux

docs 1

I took these two photographs during my commute one morning last week. I could easily take several similar photos during every morning and evening commute, as well as at my office, to make this obvious point: classic Dr. Marten AirWair boots are back (again). I supposed it’s been a while since their last revival. I’m not sure what exactly prompted this latest wave, but a whole new generation of girls has suddenly embraced them this spring.

These two young women were waiting for a crosstown bus in their purple and oxblood Docs.
