Covet: Book Skirt from Garnet Hill

skirt

I usually wear dresses, rather than skirts with tops, but if I were looking for a new skirt for autumn, this one from Garnet Hill would be at the top of my wishlist. Why? Because it has a print of bookshelves. The catalogue suggsts that each row of books also “looks like an urban skyline.” Sure, why not? Two of my favorite things.

5 on 5: Ways to Get Your Bosch On

I remember the first time I saw Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights (1500-1505), or rather a reproduction of this (in)famous painting: I was a college freshman, and it was printed as a full-color fold-out in my Janson’s History of Art. Like most people who are familiar with this enigmatic masterwork, I still love it and I still don’t understand it. I don’t think the historians of Renaissance art have figured it out yet, either.

Alexander McQueen’s final collection (2010) included a dress printed with details of Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights and his Temptation of St. Anthony. (There was also a matching handbag.) And the house of Carven has recently copycatted this idea.

Even if you weren’t able to scoop up one of McQueen’s Bosch dresses or bags (hah!), there are ways to incorporate bits of this enigmatic work into your own look…

Things That Make You Go Hmmm: Sephora “Drop Dead Gorgeous” Clutch

I was flipping through Allure magazine last night and I spied this item in a spread of new products for Fall 2013. It’s Sephora’s “Drop Dead Gorgeous” studded clutch case containing a set of five makeup brushes ($58).

I won’t go on and on about the way that skull motifs have become mainstream over the past decade, and how much this phenomenon annoys former-Goth me. (Just one thing, because I can’t resist: on a recent visit to Fairfield County, Connecticut, a place synonymous with bland suburban affluence, I saw a blond 6- or 7-year-old boy wearing a pair of preppy shorts embroidered with tiny black skulls rather than whales or sailboats. Now I’ll stop.)

So, my first thought about Sephora’s brush case was “oh, no, another skull,” and my second was, “but where have I seen this clutch purse before?”

Covet: Hurraw! Ayurvedic Lip Balms

Screen Shot 2013-07-26 at 9.26.49 PM

Hurraw! is a small company that specializes in all-natural, vegan lip balms in a range of flavors. They even offer a tinted balm (Black Cherry), an SPF balm, and now, three balms designed to complement the three doshas of Ayurveda. (You can read more about Ayurveda and take a test to determine your own dosha here.)

My dosha is primarily Kapha, with a few aspects of Pitta. However, all three balms sound wonderful to me. They’re flavored with herbs and spices like ginger, tulsi, cardamom, and lemongrass, and they sell for $4.29 each at the Hurraw! website.
