Sometimes, on a cloudy and frigid late-winter day when you’re feeling down, you just have to buy something completely self-indulgent and light-hearted. (Well, maybe you don’t, but I do!) This month, it was Paul & Joe Beauté to the rescue. I’m always fond of their limited edition cosmetics packaging, and this kitten design is a Paul & Joe classic.
These cardboard compacts (with concealed magnetic closures) are sold empty and can be filled with Paul & Joe’s Eye Color and Cheek Color palettes. This spring, eight limited edition Eye Color Trios are available. My pick is Cherry Blossom (05), a pink-and-neutral grouping, although I was also tempted by Garden of Flowers (pastels) and My Little Cat (browns).
Here’s a shot of Cherry Blossom in its new “home.” The pink shade applies almost translucently and contains very, very fine sparkles. The warm golden-brown has some very fine rose shimmer and applies like a light champagne hue. The cooler, rich-looking brown actually applies considerably lighter and sheerer than it looks in the pan, and it has a small amount of wine-tinted shimmer.
Here’s an attempt at swatches, although I’m never very good at them…
You can see how delicate the light pink shadow is, and how wearable the two browns are. I’ve been pairing the pink and golden-brown shades for a simple, soft look, or adding the darker brown in the crease for a little more drama and definition. Paul & Joe’s eye colors are generally not very densely pigmented, and this trio is typically sheer. I did get some glitter “fallout” from the pink shadow, which was brushed away easily enough.
My go-to eye shadows for workdays are Laura Mercier and Sunday Riley neutrals in matte or satin finishes, but I like having something a little more fun and frivolous for weekends. This set just feels spring-y and happy and sweet, and that’s what I needed right now.
